A Bowling Green State University student was struck by a train early this morning at the East Reed Street
crossing.
Michael S. Irwin, 19, was taken by Bowling Green EMS to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police received the call from CSX at 1:20 a.m. that a pedestrian had been struck by a northbound train at
the crossing, which is one block west of campus.
East Reed for years has been closed at the railroad tracks, with no vehicular or pedestrian crossing
allowed.
According to police, Irwin was lying beside the tracks, and tried to get out of the way when he heard the
train whistle sound. He received a "glancing blow" from the engine.
While in the hospital emergency room, Irwin, of Waterville and with a local address of East Wooster
Street, was cited for criminal trespass and underage/under the influence.
Local officers notified the Waterville Police Department to alert Irwin’s mother of the accident.
East Reed is one block north of Merry Street, where 21-year-old Timothy Gregory, of Findlay and also a
BGSU student, was struck and killed by a train in July 2007.
A second pedestrian-train fatality later that month occurred between Sunrise Drive and Lehman Avenue, and
involved a 32-year-old Toledo man.
