Twinkie bandits abscond with more than $1,000 in baked goods

A Toledo man and woman will appear in court Friday for their role in stealing hundreds of Twinkies and
other baked goods.
A Wood County Grand Jury last week indicted Nancy Harsh and David Wetzel for theft of more than $1,000
worth of Twinkies.
According to the indictments, both face similar charges involving a May 23 theft from Wonder Bread
(Continental Bakery), located at 3818 Woodville Road, Northwood. The indictments specified the theft
involved more than $500 worth of "Twinkie baked goods."
The theft was reported just after noon on that day.
According to the Northwood Police report, a store representative indicated "a woman had loaded her
trunk with cupcakes and Twinkies and fled." The store representative also told the police the woman
was assisted by an unknown male.
"There was an entire rack of the cakes taken," the report stated. "The rack had been
inside the rear garage area of the building."
The police report documented 28 trays were taken with nine boxes per tray valued at $3.99 each for a
total value stolen of more than $1,005 for the 252 boxes.
The boxes actually contained a variety of fresh baked goods including Twinkies.
The question on some minds is will the pair use a "Twinkie Defense" for their actions?
Though not a legitimate courtroom defense, the Twinkie defense is a a catchall term used for an
improbable legal defense. The term was coined by reporters during coverage of a murder trial when the
defendant consumed lots of high sugar foods.
Both Harsh, 39, and Wetzel, 45, will appear for arraignment before Wood County Common Pleas Court Judge
Alan Mayberry on Friday at 1 p.m.
