Football fans in the Suburban Lakes League and the Toledo Area Athletic Conference will need to arrive 30 minutes earlier this season. All home league games and virtually all non-league home games in the SLL and the TAAC will now start at 7 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. Genoa of the SLL still will play three home non-league games at 7:30 p.m. The Northern Lakes League switched to 7 p.m. starts last season, while the Midland Athletic League will continue to play its games at 7:30 p.m. Northwest Ohio leagues have been changing to the 7 p.m. kickoff during recent seasons. "Other leagues have gone to that (the 7 p.m. start) and games are taking longer to play," Eastwood athletics director Chris Fahim said of the reason for the change. Eastwood, Elmwood, Lake and Otsego play in the SLL, while Northwood is in the TAAC. BG, Perrysburg and Rossford all went to the earlier start in the NLL last season. Lakota and North Baltimore are the Wood County schools in the MAL. "With more teams using spread offenses and passing the ball more, games are taking longer to play," Lake athletics director Dave Shaffer said. Games that started at 7:30 often ended by 9:30-9:45 when run-oriented offenses were prevalent. But the spread has caused games to last as late as 10-10:30. Junior varsity teams play Saturday morning games, while most varsity teams meet Saturday morning to review their Friday night game. "This allows us to get everyone home earlier," Fahim said. The 7 p.m. start may be a little more difficult in the TAAC where travel distances are longer. Most trips in the NLL and the SLL are within 30 minutes. But in the TAAC, the conference has an extreme of Danbury in Lakeside to the east, and Edon and Hilltop to the west. Edon is in the northwest corner of the state, north of Edgerton and just inside the Indiana line. Hilltop is in West Unity, just south of the Ohio Turnpike and northeast of Bryan. That will make it tough for most TAAC fans who work until 5 p.m. Friday to get to the games on time. The TAAC has four teams in the Toledo area - Northwood, Cardinal Stritch, Ottawa Hills and Toledo Christian. According to Mapquest, Hilltop is 118.5 miles one way from Danbury. "The concern is getting fans to the games on time," Northwood coach Ken James said. Northwood is 80.5 miles from Edon and 42.6 miles from Danbury. |
