PERRYSBURG — Perrysburg’s girls won’t have long to savor their surprising district championship. After upsetting previously unbeaten Marion Harding on Saturday at the University of Findlay, the Yellow Jackets have one day of practice before facing Brecksville Broadview Heights in the Division I regional semifinals on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Norwalk High School. “I said before the Marion Harding game we’re going to Findlay to win, not just to show up and hopefully we put on a pretty good show,” said first-year coach Todd Sims of Perrysburg’s 36-27 win over Harding, the No. 3 team in Division I. “Our goal Tuesday at Norwalk is to win. Whatever happens, happens. But that’s our goal. We’re not just going there to put up a decent fight and not lose by too many.” There will be an element of the unknown in the regional semifinal matchup between the ’Jackets (17-6 overall) and the Bees (18-5). As of Sunday afternoon, Sims said he hadn’t had much time to game plan for Brecksville. “I have some paper work and some stuff on them, but not much else,” said Sims before leaving for the regional coaches meeting Sunday. Brecksville defeated Rocky River Magnificat, 48-44 on Saturday to advance to regionals. The Bees scored the final five points of the game on free throws and went 15-of-22 overall from the charity stripe. Junior Leah Haught hit three 3-pointers and led Brecksville with 12 points, while senior Courtney Clark added 11. Clark, a 5-foot-9 guard, is one of only two seniors on Brecksville’s roster, as the Bees feature a roster full of juniors. Brecksville returned nine letter winners this season, including four starters, from a year ago when it went 16-5. Haught, a 5-8 guard, is a three-year starter is the team’s leading scorer by a slim margin. Julia D’Agostino (5-7) Becky Famurewa (5-11), Ashley King (6-0) and Andrea Cargill (6-0) have all played key roles for the Bees this season, as Brecksville’s roster features plenty of size and depth. According to the limited information Sims has been able to gather so far, including speaking with Harding coach Greg Noftz after their game Saturday, he believes Brecksville is a team that plays a similar style to that of Springfield, Perrysburg’s Northern Lakes League rival. “We heard they were a full-court, man-to-man, kind of wear you down sort of team,” Sims said. “I would think they would play a decent amount of players if they try to do that. “We’re going to have to handle pressure. Get the ball inside, work inside out ... We’re an inside-out team and that’s what we’re going to do.” Though the ’Jackets don’t have much time to prepare for Brecksville, don’t expect Perrysburg to change its defensive style, one that has gotten the team to two straight regional appearances. “We have a system here that we’ve had in place for years and that’s what we do,” Sims said. “We try to adjust if things aren’t going right and make a few changes here and there, but if it doesn’t happen worse things are going to happen in your life than losing a basketball game. “When we do that we play pretty well. We just sort of play. We try not to get too wound up.” Toledo Waite and Lorain Southview meet in the earlier semifinal at 6:15 p.m. The semifinal winners meet back at Norwalk Saturday at 1 p.m. |
